Kassé Mady Diabaté (African), Tegere Tulon (written in 2018) Funtukuru This song is made up of three short call and response songs whose lyrics are built around counting, which is a characteristic component of the tegere tulon tradition. It was inspired by a trip to film handclapping songs in Funtukuru, a village located deep in the rolling savannah countryside of western Mali, where Hawa's husband, Demba Kouyaté, was born. Funtukuru is inhabited almost entirely by Mande jelis (griots, or hereditary musicians), and they carry on traditions that are mostly lost in the bigger towns and cities of western Mali, including tegere tulon. This piece was commissioned for Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, a project of the Kronos Performing Arts Association. The score and parts are available for free online. Although she was born in Canada and grew up in the U.S., her Argentine parents poured the music of Latin America into her from an early age. With all the music flowing around her throughout her upbringing, becoming a professional musician was not a choice but a calling. She began performing wherever she could during high school, singing everything from choral music to jazz standards. In 2015, Florencia graduated from Queens University of Charlotte with a degree in Music Therapy and was thrilled to combine her passion for music and her desire to make a difference in the world with this profession. Still, she never lost her love of composing and performing. A nomad at heart, Florencia has had the opportunity to travel and perform in various countries such as Kenya, Argentina, and Ecuador, where she recorded and released her first EP. In addition, she has been touring the Southeastern region with her band, Florencia & The Feeling, for the last year. Her music is available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and other music listening platforms. Website: www.florenciarusinol.com
